The Charleston Symphony Orchestra has long been an important part of Charleston's cultural heritage. A group of 30-40 musicians started the city's first orchestra in 1918, performing mostly for friends and family. The Charleston Symphony Orcestra was officially founded in 1936 by Miss Maude Winthrop Gibbon and Mrs. Martha Laurens Patterson and is now recognized as one of the Southeast's leading arts organizations.
The mission of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra is "to promote the enjoyment and appreciation of music among visitors and the peoples of the Tri-County region and to make music a vital part of the area’s cultural life." They accomplish this through concerts and the many educational programs they offer such as their In-School Ensembles, Adopt A School program and Kinder Konzerts.
