Nonprofits: Doing more with less

This week I completed a months-long research project looking at the financial state of Western New York's nonprofit sector.

It's a project I do every year, picking apart the tax filings for hundreds of nonprofit organizations, identifying nearly 300 that each have revenue of at least $1 million. My 2012 Million Dollar Nonprofits report will be published in Friday's paper, and available on newsstands for those without a subscription - there's my plug.

Besides overall revenues, I also look at where all those dollars come from: the state, private donations, fundraising efforts and grant-making by foundations. More importantly, we look at how they're being spent, and whether they're going to salaries of administrators in cushy offices, or in the trenches for programs and services. And of course, we look at how much is being paid to the executives who run these agencies.
