Mount Pleasant pediatric dental office Kids Teeth is hosting a Healthy Smile Selfie contest. During the month of February, take a photo of your children practicing good dental hygiene, upload it to your Facebook page and tag @kidsteethsc or share it on Instagram using #healthysmileselfie. For each entry submitted, Kids Teeth will donate $1 to Windwood Farm, a home for boys who have been abused or neglected. The winner will receive one year of free dental care and a child’s Fitbit.


Tiger Lily florist shop in Charleston has selected Chase After a Cure to participate in its new Charity in Bloom program. During the month of February, 20% of the proceeds from the Charity in Bloom special arrangement will support the nonprofit’s work funding pediatric cancer research. The arrangement includes a variety of pink and white roses and hydrangeas and is available in four sizes, with prices ranging from $85 to $200. Order the arrangement online or call 843-723-2808. Attendees at the ninth annual Chase After a Cure gala on Feb. 4 will have a chance to bid on the Charity in Bloom arrangement as part of a silent auction. Charleston has been named one of eight communities nationwide as “Great American Defense Communities” by the Association of Defense Communities. The Charleston RiverDogs minor league baseball team was cited among the many reasons for Charleston’s recognition with the support provided by the club to military families. Over the next six months, each community will host a local event recognizing its selection. The events will culminate in a special reception and congressional breakfast during the Defense Communities National Summit June 19-21 in Washington, D.C.

Bosch will host the third annual Bosch 5K run at 9 a.m. March 18 at Riverfront Park in North Charleston. Participants can register online and will receive a New Balance race shirt. Proceeds will benefit the Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center.

Carolina Youth Development Center will hold its annual Shuckin’ for Shelter charity oyster roast from 2-5 p.m. March 25 at Oakley Farms, 112 Paso Lane in Moncks Corner. Proceeds will benefit the Callen-Lacey Center for Children, an emergency shelter in Berkeley County serving children in foster care who have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Attendees can bring their own food and drink. Music, cornhole, children’s games and activities will be part of the event.

BJ’s Wholesale Club has donated $100,000 to fund all classroom projects listed by teachers in Charleston, Summerville and neighboring communities through the crowd-funding website DonorsChoose.org. The donation from BJ’s Charitable Foundation fulfilled 141 teacher-led projects, benefiting 846 students in 65 local schools.

The 13th annual Respite Care Charleston golf tournament fundraiser is April 3 at the Seabrook Island Club. Registration is $150 per person and includes greens fee, cart, lunch, contests, refreshments and awards reception. Tickets for the reception and awards ceremony are $25.

The Pork & Pearls oyster and pig roast benefiting Windwood Family Services will be held from 3-7 p.m. Feb. 2 at Volvo Cars Stadium on Daniel Island. Tickets are $45 for adults and $15 for children ages 3-12. Admission includes live music, beverages and all-you-can eat oysters and barbecue.

Charleston Surfrider’s Love Your Ocean fundraiser is at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 at Redux Studios, 136 St. Philip St. in Charleston and will feature a silent auction, live music, beer from SweetWater Brewing, vodka from Cathead and food from Middleton Place restaurant. Each ticket is $15 and includes one drink. All proceeds will support Charleston Surfrider’s programs and campaigns, such as Rise Above Plastics and Ocean Friendly Restaurants.
