The Charleston RiverDogs and Charleston County School District have partnered for Reading Around the Bases, a baseball-themed reading program for local students.
The 12-week program began Thursday, with participating second-grade students receiving a Reading Challenge packet with a scorecard, tracking sheet and personal baseball card. Students move around the bases on their scorecard based on how many pages they read: 100 pages for a single, 200 for a double, 300 for a triple and 500 for a home run.
RiverDogs personnel will visit schools throughout the program to serve as volunteer readers. The winning second-grade class from each school will receive special seating and recognition at a RiverDogs game May 31.

Charleston Young Professionals, a division of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, is partnering with Be A Mentor, a nonprofit organization headquartered in North Charleston, to encourage young professionals’ involvement with area young people. Be A Mentor has programs designed to help children from elementary to high school age with academics, career choices, goal-setting and socialization skills. An information session will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. today at the Coastal Community Foundation.
