Domestic violence is one of the most common crimes committed in the United States. In fact every 13 seconds a act of domestic violence will occur in this country, the majority of the violence committed against women. Their children become traumatized by witnessing this violence, often becoming victims or abusers themselves.
My Sister's House, Inc., is a nonprofit organization founded in 1980 that provides services, programs and resources to empower domestic violence victims and their children to live free from abuse. The organization operates an emergency temporary shelter at an undisclosed location for up to 36 women and children who flee abusive situations in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties. They offer a number of programs and services including :
- 24-hour crisis line
- Food, clothing, transportation and help with purchasing medication
- Children's program
- Counseling and therapeutic assessments
- Music, art and pet therapy
- Community-based support groups
- Police in-service training in dealing with abuse victims
- Court advocacy
- Community education
