Nonprofits collaborate to beautify the community
By Al Thompson
Lampoc (CA) RecordThis column references organizations relating to the plant world founded by local citizens, some of which are involved in the beautification of the community. All these groups are nonprofit and raise their own funding from memberships, sales and special events.
The Lompoc Valley Botanic and Horticultural Society, founded in 1977, has as its purposes the development of local horticultural interests, the development of interest in garden use of native plants and the promotion of public awareness of the Botanic Garden in Ken Adam Park where the group was first formed, a garden that preserves a representation of the rich flora of the Burton Mesa.
Through its 34 years of now-famous plant sales, the Society has been able to generate more than $200,000 worth of plants, tools and equipment for schools and public places, library materials and funding for a Drought-tolerant Garden.
Its membership is open to anyone having an interest in plants and gardens. Meeting bimonthly from September through May, it offers a diverse presentation of programs and an annual plant and seed exchange. LVBHS, P.O. Box 1266, Lompoc CA 93438-1266 and on its website www.lvbhs.org.
