Foundation Spotlight

The John & Kathleen Rivers Foundation, Inc.

Formerly known as the John M. Rivers Jr. Foundation, it is an independent foundation that was established in 1995 and in 2005 awarded approximately $160,000 in grants to organizations primarily in North and South Carolina. The primary focus of the John & Kathleen Rivers Foundation is to fund in the areas of art and education in order to strengthen communities that have a special relationship with the Rivers family.
Some of the organizations that received grants in 2005 were:
  • College of Charleston
  • United Way
  • Spoleto Festival
  • Charleston Symphony Orchestra
  • SC Coastal Conservation League
  • Historic Charleston Foundation

The deadline for application is October.

Grant Information Workshop

The annual grants workshop of the Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is scheduled for September 19 at the Daniel Island Medical Center at 900 Island Park Dr from 10am to 3pm. If your organization is involved with breast health and is a 501 (c) (3) organization, or can collaborate with one, you should plan on attending. This workshop will provide you with the tools needed to prepare and submit a grant request to the Lowcountry Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. In addition, they will share with you the details of some successful programs previously funded by their affiliate. Upcoming Events

The Charleston Association of Grant Professionals will meet Tuesday August 21 at 5:45 at the Charleston County Public Library, 68 Calhoun Street. Dr. Linda Karges-Bone will be the speaker.

Darkness to Light Prevent-A-Thon

Throughout the month of August, Darkness to Light is offering their Stewards of Children training to the public at no charge. This training enables adults to better protect children in their care from sexual abuse. Charleston Association of Grant Professionals

The CAGP meets at the Main Library the 3rd Tuesday of every month and is open to anyone that would like to attend. Next Tuesday, August 21, Dr. Linda Karges-Bone, a professor of education at Charleston Southern University and the author of three books on grant writing, will be speaking on the topic of “Building Long Term Relationships as a Factor in Grant Writing”. Foundation Directory Online

FDO is the Foundation Center's online database of more than 88,000 grantmakers and over 900,000 grants. The database also contains over a quarter of a million 990s and funder portfolios containing news, RFPs, key staff and publications. The Foundation Directory Online is located at the Main Library at 68 Calhoun Street in the Reference Department. The public can search for grants anytime during library hours. Foundation Center Cooperating Collection

The Foundation Center connects nonprofits with grantmakers by providing tools to accurate and reliable information. The Foundation Center maintains the most comprehensive database on U.S. grantmakers and their grants and by being a Cooperating Collection, the library is able to offer this information free of charge to our patrons.
